UAW 1166 General Election Candidates

UAW Local Positions — At a Glance
A quick guide to what each elected position on our Local does, taken directly from the UAW Constitution (38th Convention, July 2022).
The following summaries are drawn directly from the official UAW Constitution. Every position card includes a citation so members can verify it for themselves.
For full duties, direct quotes, and additional citations, please refer to the official UAW Constitution (PDF).
President
What they do: Runs all Local Union meetings, enforces the Constitution, signs treasury orders, countersigns checks, and appoints committees not otherwise provided for. The President is automatically a member of every committee in the Local.
Key fact: If the President leaves office, the Vice President fills the vacancy for the rest of the term — no special election.
UAW Constitution, Article 40, Section 1, p. 117
Vice President
What they do: Assists the President in carrying out their duties, attends every Local Union session, and steps in to perform the President's duties whenever the President is absent or unable to serve.
Key fact: First in line to succeed the President. If the office of President becomes vacant, the Vice President serves out the unexpired term.
UAW Constitution, Article 40, Section 2, p. 117–118; Article 38, Section 14, p. 116
Recording Secretary
What they do: Keeps the official record (minutes) of all Local Union proceedings, handles general correspondence, brings issues requiring membership action to the floor, and files the Local's contracts and classifications-and-rates list with the UAW Research Department, the Regional Director, and LUIS — within 60 days of any contract ratification.
Key fact: When a Local is unable to resolve a dispute without a strike, the Recording Secretary is the officer who prepares the formal statement of matters in controversy to send to the Regional Director and International President.
UAW Constitution, Article 40, Section 3, p. 118; Article 50, Section 2, p. 130
Guide
What they do: Maintains order at meetings, inspects membership receipts to make sure everyone present is entitled to be there (protecting the confidentiality of union business), and escorts new members through the Initiation Ceremony.
Key fact: Though small in scope, the Guide is one of the nine elected Executive Officers of the Local and has a full vote on the Local Executive Board.
UAW Constitution, Article 40, Section 14, p. 121; Article 43, p. 123
Trustees (3)
What they do: Act as the financial watchdogs of the Local. The three Trustees have general supervision over all funds and property, audit the Local's financial records every six months (using the LUIS Trustee Audit Form), ensure Financial Officers are bonded, and control safety deposit box access alongside the President and Treasurer.
Key fact: If the books are not turned over for audit within 15 days after the end of any six-month period, the Chair of the Trustees is required to report it to the next Local meeting — one of the strongest internal accountability checks in the Constitution.
UAW Constitution, Article 40, Section 12, p. 121; Article 48, Section 2, p. 126
Production Steward
What they do: Represents members in a defined area of the workplace (a department, line, or shift, as set by Local bylaws and the contract). Handles first-step grievances, monitors contract compliance and working conditions, and serves as the front-line connection between members and the Union.
Key fact: "Production Steward" is not a title used in the International Constitution — it's set by your Local's bylaws and your collective bargaining agreement. The Constitution covers the role generally under "Stewards and Committeepersons" (Article 45). Stewards are elected for 3-year terms and can be recalled by the members they represent by a two-thirds vote at a special meeting — making this the most directly accountable position in the Local.
